About the name

Short version

Herons hold strong symbolic meaning that represent everything I want Blue Heron to be. 

Long version
For as long as I can remember, animals have been communicating with me. No, not in a Dr. Doolittle sense. That would be cool, but in the way that their presence cannot be ignored. Whether it be the Blue Tongue lizards that would bask in the sun alongside me during the hot Australian summers, the Praying Mantises that would appear every time I needed some guidance and have followed me around the world, the Magpie that trusted me to take care of her baby while she went looking for food, and finally, the Grey Heron who ever so elegantly interrupted my deep thoughts about what I should call this brand.

I didn’t know much about Herons so I immediately googled the spiritual meaning of the Heron and that was it. There was no other name that it could be. Blue Heron was born.

The Heron has symbolic meaning in just about every culture and religion so it’s hard to sum it up in just a few paragraphs but here goes:

“Occasionally, Heron symbolism is asking you to follow your path and not those of your peers. In other words, the Heron meaning is asking you to find unconventional ways to be self-reliant and productive. Therefore this suggests that no matter what the task, you can do it and do it well. In some cultures, those who possess the Heron totem are believed to be a “Jack of all trades”. While it may appear that this person has no real direction or goal and their life seems completely unstructured,(ouch, no need to make it personal), this ability to learn and adapt their many skills to any task or situation provides them with a security. Basically, they’ll always figure out a way to get the job done. It may not be perfect, because remember, a Jack of all trades is a master of none, but in my humble opinion, a master of one is quite useless in most situations. I say this confidently as a jack of all trades with countless career changes and absolutely no structure in my life. 

And then there’s the lucky souls that believe the heron is their spirit animal. They are happy in their independence and uniqueness. They don’t need people around them all the time and they certainly don’t feel the need to keep up with current trends. “...they know how to snatch and take advantage of things and events that the average person would leave untouched.” spirit-animals.com. E.g. Me in a thrift store. 

The heron can be found in three elements: water, air and earth. Did you know that it takes roughly 3700-7500 litres of water to make a pair of jeans? And what about the fact that the fashion industry contributes about 10% of global carbon emissions? And I mean, don’t even get me started on the pollution. 2 million tons of denim alone is thrown into landfill every year. Herons can be found in the three elements that we need to protect the most.
